I never quite understood when someone said, “that was a lifetime ago,” until I moved to Nashville. As the city grew so rapidly, we measured ourselves as much by how much we change as by how much the city changes. Each building marks time and memories, and there are more buildings and memories here than we could have imagined when we started. They mark a different time and place.
The best things in life come at a cost, and unlike Captain Marvel (or even Captain America), we only get one life to live spend on them. When Dr. Strange held one finger up to Tony signifying the 1:14,000,000 scenario of this battle ending in victory, it was significant because it meant Tony had to lose.
The Players Championship is a major. To paraphrase Ron Swanson, I think you thought I said, “The Players Championship should be a major.” No, it’s a capital ‘M’ Major. It is the premier event of the most influential governing body in golf with the strongest field and second largest purse. Yet, it is not officially recognized as a Major by anyone, including the organization that puts it on- the PGA TOUR.
The TOUR is not regular golf, nor is it the vast gradations of amateur and professional golf that exists below it. It is best they receive their own rules and technology. This is accepted in every other major professional league and their minor league and amateur offshoots with very little conflict or none at all.
The climax of the movie is early, and it is the best ten minutes had in a movie theater this year. The Shallow performance was used as a marketing tool, a trailer, a hit song, and more than anything, it is the thesis for the movie. It is the axis by which this movie turns, and Cooper’s visual language shows us that Jackson Maine gladly descends into the background as Ally ascends to center stage. Both are fulfilled by each other and the roles they play in each other’s lives.
2018 was a year of transition. I moved away from the classroom after nine years, my family moved to Nashville (again), and I started writing freelance with articles published by The Florida Writer, The Golfer’s Journal, Men’s Journal, and G&E Magazine. Currently, I write for AnchorofGold.com, the Vanderbilt SBNation affiliate, about Vanderbilt sports, mostly football and non-revenue sports like soccer, cross country, and golf.
